Nigeria's NDLEA Destroys 25 tonnes of Seized Drugs and Seizes Cartel Assets

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) publicly destroyed more than 25,000 kg of seized narcotics in Imo State, including roughly 25 t of cannabis, 2,319 L of codeine‑based cough syrup, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and other psychotropic substances. NDLEA Chairman Mohammed Buba‑Marwa emphasized that the destruction was conducted in full view of the public to prevent any reuse of the drugs.

In a separate initiative, the NDLEA announced a crackdown on the financial assets of drug traffickers, using civil in‑rem actions to forfeit proceeds to the federal government. Chairman Buba‑Marwa, speaking with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Abuja, said the agency is “liquidating the financial empires” of drug barons under the Proceeds of Crime Act. The announcement coincided with activities for World Drug Day, including a walk against drugs and a Thanksgiving church service.
