West African nations seize large drug shipments
Authorities in several West African countries reported major drug seizures in late July. Senegal's gendarmerie intercepted 242.25 kg of Indian hemp in Mbour, arresting three suspects. In Ghana's Northern Region, the Red Maria Task Force seized 170 parcels of suspected Indian hemp, leading to two arrests, while a separate operation in Tamale recovered the same amount of hemp.
Algeria's security forces dismantled three criminal networks, seizing more than 112 kg of cannabis originating from Morocco, confiscating nearly one billion centimes and eight vehicles, and arresting eleven suspects. In Nigeria, the NDLEA seized 1,359 kg of cannabis in Edo State and arrested two traffickers; a Lagos task force later detained 33 suspected drug criminals. The Kano task force chair warned politicians against interfering with the drug crackdown. Meanwhile, the Ivory Coast's Korhogo operation resulted in 124 arrests, the destruction of 44 illicit smoking dens, and the seizure of over 30 tonnes of counterfeit medicines and drugs. UNODC, NDLEA and the Nigerian Union of Journalists called for stronger family‑focused actions against drug abuse.
