Nigeria's NIPSS Institute Attacked, Three Security Personnel Killed

Gunmen stormed the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, near Jos, early on 16 June 2026. The attackers targeted the homes of Acting Director Barrister Nima Salman‑Mann and Professor Haruna Dabin, after leaving handwritten ransom notes demanding $100,000 and N15 million. Security forces exchanged fire with the assailants, killing two soldiers and one police officer before the gunmen were repelled.

The institute confirmed the incident and said normal activities had resumed after the area was secured. The following day, Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu sent Deputy Inspector‑General Isyaku Muhammed to NIPSS. Muhammed expressed condolences, announced a new police post on the campus, and vowed to pursue the perpetrators. Institute Director General Prof. Ayo Omotayo thanked the police and noted that prior warnings had been received but the attack still occurred.

Both the army and police have intensified patrols around the institute, and investigations are ongoing.
