Nigeria's North West Development Commission secures ₦15.2bn, launches projects for 30,000 farmers and 10,000 youths
The North West Development Commission (NWDC) in Nigeria received ₦15.17 billion in federal allocations between January and May 2026, spent ₦1.2 billion and held a balance of ₦13.97 billion as of 5 July 2026. The commission, which serves the seven North West states, is preparing major interventions across agriculture, healthcare, education, youth empowerment and security. Planned projects include free fertilizer distribution to 30,000 farming households, a Youth Skills Acquisition Programme for 10,000 beneficiaries, upgrades to primary health centres, rehabilitation of secondary schools, motorised and solar‑powered boreholes for clean water, resettlement of internally displaced persons and the provision of vehicles and equipment to security agencies. A temporary headquarters has been set up in Kano, with additional office space donated by Kaduna and Katsina, and land and vehicles contributed by Kano State. The NWDC is also establishing a liaison office in Abuja and engaging with foreign embassies (Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, India, Russia) and partners such as UNDP, UNESCO and eHealth Africa. The commission’s operations and spending were scrutinised by the Senate Committee on Regional Development, prompting calls for transparency, efficient use of resources and measurable development outcomes.
