Nigeria's PDP Unity Drive and New Save Democracy Group Signal Political Turbulence

Former Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki addressed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders and stakeholders in Ilorin, Kwara State, urging them to preserve party unity as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify. He highlighted that all PDP candidates have been uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission portal and praised recent defections to the party as evidence of public desire for credible governance.

Separately, a bipartisan coalition of House of Representatives members launched the Save Democracy Group, calling on the leadership of Nigeria’s National Assembly to reconvene both chambers immediately. The group warned that constitutional breaches, fiscal mismanagement, economic hardship and worsening security are causing “Nigeria’s democracy to nose‑dive,” and urged legislative action to address these crises.
