Nigeria's Power Minister Brokers Reform Truce and Grid Overhaul Push

Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe convened a high‑level stakeholder meeting that produced a truce between the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and State Electricity Regulatory Commissions. The agreement includes a four‑week roadmap to implement the Electricity Act 2023, the creation of a nine‑member inter‑agency committee chaired by the minister, and a Senate decision to defer further amendment of the Act until broader consensus is reached.

Separately, power‑sector advocacy group PowerUp Nigeria warned that Nigeria’s national grid has failed over 222 times between 2010 and 2022 and repeatedly collapsed in 2024‑2025, driving more than 60 % of manufacturers to rely on captive generation. The group urged the federal government to launch an urgent grid overhaul, invest in transmission infrastructure, ensure the independence of the Nigerian Independent System Operator, and design incentives to bring industry back onto the grid. Both developments highlight the critical need for coordinated regulatory action and infrastructure investment to improve electricity reliability and support Nigeria’s industrial competitiveness.
