Abayomi Fasina's Ambassadorial Nomination Sparks Support and Opposition in Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated former Federal University Oye‑Ekiti Vice‑Chancellor Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina as a non‑career ambassador. Supporters, including university deans and the National Association of Nigerian Students, cite his record of expanding the university, securing accreditations and boosting research, arguing he will enhance Nigeria’s international image and create opportunities for students.

Opposition comes from a coalition of over 200 women’s groups and civil‑society organisations that have petitioned the Senate to withhold confirmation until pending criminal and civil cases are resolved. The petition highlights allegations of sexual harassment, abuse of office, workplace victimisation and human‑rights violations, noting a 37‑minute audio recording as part of the evidence. Petitioners argue that ambassadorial appointments demand the highest integrity and that unresolved claims could damage Nigeria’s reputation and public confidence in anti‑corruption institutions.

Fasina’s defenders say police investigations and university governing‑council reviews found no wrongdoing and cleared him of the accusations. The debate centers on whether the presumption of innocence suffices for a diplomatic post or whether higher standards of conduct are required before Senate confirmation.
