Nigeria's PRP rejects Tinubu's plan for state police

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s push to create state police in Nigeria. In a statement, PRP National Chairman Dr. Hakeem Baba‑Ahmed argued that the administration “lacks the moral assets and the trust of Nigerians” to undertake such a major constitutional change and urged the public to reject the proposal.

The PRP said the timing is inappropriate, recommending that any overhaul of policing be postponed until after the next general elections when a government with broader public confidence is in place. The party acknowledged the need for security reform but dismissed the current plan as suspicious. The Senate had recently passed the Constitution Alteration Bill that would allow state police, pending approval by at least two‑thirds of the Senate, 24 state houses of assembly, and presidential assent.
