Nigeria’s Renewables Move Toward Battery Storage as Solar Prices Drop
At the Solar & Storage Live Nigeria conference, industry leaders highlighted a rapid decline in solar equipment costs and a shift toward battery storage. Ayo Adedimulua, president of the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN), said component prices have fallen by more than 100 % over the past decade, making solar competitive with fossil fuels.
Abba Aliyu, CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), emphasized that “the next wave of capital will go into storage,” announcing plans for 48 interconnected mini‑grids with a combined capacity of about 288 MW. REA is equipping new mini‑grids with IoT‑enabled smart meters and using AI to map over 750,000 communities, guiding investment decisions.
REAN called for deeper investment, stronger stakeholder collaboration and sustained government support to accelerate Nigeria’s clean‑energy transition. The conference aimed to connect local players with global manufacturers and investors, showcasing the country’s vast solar, hydro, wind and biomass potential.
