Nigeria's Tambuwal endorses Faruk Malami‑Yabo for Senate as he retreats from local politics

Former Sokoto governor and senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal announced a gradual withdrawal from active local politics, saying he will focus on mentoring younger leaders. At a stakeholder meeting in Sokoto he formally endorsed Faruk Malami‑Yabo as his successor for the Senate seat.

Tambuwal praised Malami‑Yabo as a “committed, capable, and visionary leader” and stressed the need to nurture fresh voices within the opposition. He warned that the 2027 general election could mirror the fragmented presidential contest of 1979, with multiple candidates splitting the vote. While criticizing the ruling All Progressives Congress for worsening economic hardship since 2015, Tambuwal dismissed suggestions of internal crises in the African Democratic Congress, insisting his decision was personal and aimed at leadership renewal.
