Nighttime light exposure linked to cardiac remodeling and heart disease risk
A study published in the European Heart Journal has linked nighttime light exposure to adverse cardiac remodeling. Researchers from Tulane University analyzed data from 11,071 participants in the UK Biobank, using wrist-worn sensors to monitor light levels for seven days. Three years later, participants underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging to assess heart structure and function.
The findings indicate that exposure to light levels above 3 lux during sleep is associated with measurable physical changes in the heart. These include a 2.4% increase in left ventricular mass, a 1.5% increase in heart wall thickness, and a 1.9% decrease in myocardial contraction fraction. Similar structural changes were also observed in the right ventricle and left atrium.
Long-term follow-up data suggests significant health risks. Participants with high nighttime light exposure showed a 29% higher risk of heart failure, a 24% higher risk of heart attack, and a 33% higher risk of stroke when assessed 8 to 10 years after initial measurements. Researchers noted that shorter sleep duration may explain between 24% and 49% of the association, but light exposure remains a distinct potential risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
