Niigata water accident kills two children
A water accident in Niigata Prefecture resulted in the deaths of a 13-year-old girl and her 8-year-old brother on August 10. The incident occurred near Tsunodahama Beach in Nishikan Ward, where a family of three was swept out to sea while playing on a float.
According to the Niigata Coast Guard, the father and daughter were using a float when they were carried offshore. When the father attempted to help his son, who had swum out to them, the group was overturned by waves. The victims were not wearing life jackets at the time of the accident.
Experts, including Associate Professor Naoyuki Inukai of Nagaoka University of Technology, suggest that strong rip currents and wind conditions likely contributed to the tragedy. Inukai noted that wind and currents were moving in a direction that made it easy for floating objects to be swept away, warning that rip currents can become powerful enough to be impossible for humans to resist.
