Water accidents in Taiwan and Japan

Overview

During the summer holiday period, multiple water-related accidents involving swimmers were reported in Taiwan and Japan.

In Taiwan, a 15-year-old male student was rescued after being swept approximately 100 meters offshore by waves at Shaluun Beach. In Japan, several fatal incidents occurred during the Obon holiday, including three women being swept away by waves in a prohibited swimming area in Ibaraki Prefecture and the death of a 19-year-old man in Shizuoka Prefecture.

On August 10, a further tragedy occurred in Niigata Prefecture near Tsunodahama Beach, where a 13-year-old girl and her 8-year-old brother died after their family was swept out to sea while using a float. Experts noted that the victims were not wearing life jackets and suggested that strong rip currents and wind conditions likely contributed to the incident.
