Balkan region battles widespread wildfires across multiple countries
Multiple countries across the Balkan region are battling widespread wildfires. In Serbia, authorities report 20 active open-space fires, though major blazes on the Stolovi and Goč mountains have been localized after intense firefighting efforts involving hundreds of personnel and international aerial support. A state of natural disaster has been declared in Teslić due to severe fires.
In Albania, the Ministry of Defense reports 27 total fires, with 8 remaining active. Emergency operations are concentrated in the Dibër, Lezhë, Tiranë, and Shkodër regions. In the Lezhë district, specifically the Kalivaç–Zimaj–Kashnjet axis, residents have been evacuated as fires spread.
Montenegro is facing critical situations in Nikšić, where fires have approached residential areas in Vitasojevići and Praga. Local rescue officials have expressed concerns that some fires in the municipality may have been intentionally set. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, firefighting efforts are severely hampered by a fire located in a mined area between Nevesinje and Konjic, making land-based intervention impossible.
North Macedonia has also recorded 24 fires, with 5 currently active across various municipalities including Mavrovo and Rostuše, Gostivar, and Struga.
