Nikola Burgazliev placed under house arrest in Sunny Beach ATV crash case

The Burgas District Court has changed the detention measure for Nikola Burgazliev, the defendant in the fatal 2025 Sunny Beach ATV accident. After 14 months in custody, Burgazliev will serve house arrest under electronic monitoring and is prohibited from leaving the country.

The court ruled that there is no immediate risk of the defendant fleeing or committing new crimes, citing his clean criminal record and established family ties. The defense requested the change, pointing to the length of his detention and new evidence, including video footage from a technical inspection point. An expert report indicated the ATV had no mechanical failures and was traveling at approximately 28 km/h before the driver made a sudden rightward maneuver that sent the vehicle onto the sidewalk.

The incident occurred on August 14, 2025, when the ATV struck five pedestrians. The crash resulted in the death of 35-year-old Hristina Sokolova and caused serious injuries to her four-year-old son and two other children. Toxicology reports confirmed the presence of THC in Burgazliev’s system at the time of the accident. The decision to change the measure is separate from the main trial, which is scheduled to continue on November 3.
