Sunny Beach fatal ATV accident legal proceedings
Overview
Legal proceedings are ongoing in the Burgas District Court regarding a fatal ATV accident that occurred in Sunny Beach on August 14, 2025. The incident involved an electric ATV striking five people in a pedestrian zone, resulting in the death of 35-year-old Hristina Sokolova and injuries to four others, including three children.
During court hearings, the defense has raised several arguments. One claim suggests that video footage of the crash shows a different vehicle than the one involved in the accident, citing discrepancies in license plate numbers. The defense also proposed that the crash may have been caused by technical brake failure, referencing a similar incident from June 2023. However, technical expertise presented to the court determined that the ATV had no mechanical failures and was traveling at approximately 28 km/h at the time of impact.
Regarding the driver, 19-year-old Nikola Burgazliev, toxicological reports confirmed the presence of THC in his system, which was described as consistent with incidental marijuana use 36 to 48 hours prior to the crash. After 14 months in custody, the court recently replaced Burgazliev’s pretrial detention with house arrest under electronic monitoring, while also imposing a ban on him leaving the country. The court cited his clean criminal record and family ties when ruling there was no immediate risk of him fleeing or committing new crimes. The next hearing is scheduled for November 3.
