Nikola Tsolov to debut in Formula 1 car at Imola test

Nikola Tsolov, the 19-year-old Bulgarian driver currently leading the Formula 2 standings, will make his debut in a Formula 1 car this week. Racing Bulls CEO Peter Bayer confirmed that Tsolov is scheduled to participate in a ‘Testing of Previous Cars’ (TPC) session at the Imola circuit on Thursday.

Tsolov will drive the VCARB 02, the team’s car from the 2025 season. This test is intended to aid his preparation and could help him secure the necessary superlicense to participate in official Formula 1 free practice sessions later this season.

A member of the Red Bull junior programme, Tsolov is considered a strong candidate for a future seat with Racing Bulls. However, Bayer noted that the team is also monitoring the impressive performances of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad. The final decision regarding the team’s driver lineup for next season will be made by Team Principal Alan Permane.
