Tsolov's F2 lead solidified, debt rescue by Red Bull
Entities: Hungaroring · Sebastian Montoya · Sebastien Monto · Gabriel Mini · Noel León
Overview
After eight of fourteen rounds, Nikola Tsolov led the 2026 Formula 2 championship with 161 points and six wins. At the Hungaroring he topped practice, but a lap‑21 clash with Sebastian Montoya in the sprint race caused a retirement and a ten‑place grid penalty for the feature race. Starting 12th, Tsolov recovered to seventh, adding six points and expanding his lead to 167 points – a 20‑point edge over Gabriele Mini and 22 over Rafael Camara. The weekend marked his first race without a podium since May, yet his consistent points kept him firmly ahead as the season moves to Monza, Madrid and the finale in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Off‑track, Red Bull intervened to free Tsolov from a restrictive contract tied to Fernando Alonso’s management, with Helmut Marko purchasing the agreement and averting a potential bankruptcy. Red Bull pledged full backing, identifying him as the likely successor for a Racing Bulls Formula 1 seat should current drivers Liam Lawson or Arvid Lindblad depart. Team principal Alan Permane reiterated that the Bulgarian remains “next in line” for a 2027 F1 debut.
