Nikopolis ancient site restored for UNESCO candidacy

The ancient site of Nikopolis has been officially handed over to the local community following the completion of major protection, restoration, and maintenance projects. The works were inaugurated by President Konstantinos Tasoulas and Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni in Preveza.

The restoration efforts, funded by the Recovery Fund and NSRF, aim to preserve the site's Roman and early Christian monuments and its well-preserved natural landscape. These interventions are part of a strategic plan by the Ministry of Culture to prepare Nikopolis for its candidacy for the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Ministry has already submitted the initial dossier for evaluation.

In addition to physical restoration, the Ministry is planning actions to protect the site from the impacts of climate change in collaboration with research centers and universities.
