Nikos Androulakis proposes windfall tax on oligopolies

PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis has announced plans to introduce a permanent legislative mechanism to tax the excess profits of oligopolies. He stated that this mechanism would be activated in coordination with independent authorities whenever an unjustified expansion of profit margins is detected.

Androulakis intends to present the specific details of this proposal at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting. He argued that the measure is necessary to combat inflation, noting that food prices in Greece have risen by 40% since 2019 and that certain essential goods and services remain 23% more expensive than the Eurozone average.

The proposed strategy includes auditing all stages of the supply chain and implementing a system that compares domestic prices with those in other countries to set profit limits. Androulakis cited the European Union's previous authorization of windfall taxes in the energy sector as a precedent for such action.
