PASOK economic and legislative proposals in Greece

PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis has introduced several legislative proposals aimed at addressing economic pressures in Greece. Initially, Androulakis proposed a permanent mechanism to impose a windfall tax on oligopolies to combat inflation. This plan involves auditing supply chains and comparing domestic prices to Eurozone averages to limit unjustified profit expansions.

Following these announcements, Androulakis expanded his platform to include agricultural and debt reform. After meeting with livestock farmers in Crete to discuss energy costs and property rights, he announced a forthcoming bill to address private debt. This proposal seeks to provide a ‘second chance’ for vulnerable citizens and limit the influence of investment funds that have acquired approximately 80 billion euros in loans.

In a recent update, Androulakis announced plans to submit a formal legislative proposal to the Greek Parliament regarding private debt. In an article published in ‘Ta Nea Savvatokyriako’, he criticized the current government for prioritizing budget surpluses while citizens struggle. He specifically targeted the shift of nearly 80 billion euros in loans from bank balance sheets to investment funds managed by servicers, noting these entities are reportedly seeing record profits.

Androulakis emphasized the need to distinguish between strategic defaulters and citizens facing genuine hardship. He criticized both the current administration and the previous SYRIZA-ANEL government, alleging that the protection of primary residences has been undermined by the introduction of electronic auctions and the opening of the market to investment funds. His plan includes 11 specific commitments intended to provide relief to debtors and protect families from losing their homes.
