Addressing the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of “hypocrisy of the highest form.” Christodoulides argued that while Erdoğan spoke of international law, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, Turkey’s actions in Cyprus directly contradict these principles.

The Cypriot leader emphasized that the only viable framework for a settlement is a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as established by UN Security Council resolutions. He expressed readiness to resume negotiations from the point where they stalled in 2017, provided there is political will and adherence to international and European Union law.

Christodoulides further condemned the continued Turkish occupation of northern Cyprus, which has lasted 52 years, and criticized the disregard for UN resolutions regarding the Varosha area. He also raised concerns regarding human rights violations, the destruction of cultural heritage, and organized demographic changes through settler transfers.

In response, Turkish officials and the Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ünal Üstel, strongly condemned Christodoulides’ remarks. Üstel accused the Greek Cypriot leadership of hypocrisy, claiming they had historically excluded the Turkish Cypriot community from the 1960 Republic and continue to impose illegal embargoes and isolation on the community.
