Cyprus leaders meet to discuss resuming peace negotiations

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman met at the United Nations offices in the old Nicosia airport to discuss the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus problem. The leaders expressed a shared goal of restarting talks from where they were interrupted in 2017, with Christodoulides describing the current situation as a ‘window of opportunity.’

During the meeting, Christodoulides presented a 19-point proposal covering methodology, substance, and confidence-building measures. While Erhurman has not officially accepted or rejected all points, he has reportedly expressed acceptance of a majority of the proposed measures. Both leaders agreed that any potential solution must adhere to United Nations Security Council resolutions.

As part of their agreement to maintain momentum, the two leaders will attend the 6th Bi-communal Peace Festival in Pyla on Saturday, October 17, 2026. They also committed to participating in upcoming technical committee meetings regarding cultural heritage and youth, as well as meetings for the Advisory Council of Civil Society. A follow-up meeting between the two leaders is scheduled for the following week. The upcoming visit of UN Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin to Cyprus is also expected to play a key role in these developments.
