Nikos Christodulidis returns from New York without Cyprus negotiation breakthroughs

Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodulidis has returned from New York without securing agreements on confidence-building measures or a decision to restart negotiations. Despite Christodulidis claiming his 19 proposals were received with 'very positive signs' by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, no concrete results have been announced.

Reports indicate a lack of progress regarding potential trilateral meetings. While Christodulidis suggested the Secretary-General was considering such talks, Guterres had previously stated he did not expect trilateral or expanded meetings due to the extensive work remaining.

Sources suggest that Turkish Cypriot President Tufan Erhürman did not consent to a joint meeting despite the Secretary-General's request. Former DISI leader Averof Neofitu commented that the trilateral meeting did not fail because it was never actually planned, noting that the lack of agreement on confidence-building measures made a deadlock predictable.
