Nikos Dendias discusses regional security and Italian minehunters in Venice
Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias participated in the Adriatic and Ionian Initiative (ADRION) summit held in Venice, Italy. The meeting, hosted by Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, brought together ministers from Albania, Croatia, Montenegro, and Slovenia to discuss regional stability and maritime security.
Dendias advocated for a collective European defence shield based on Greece’s ‘Achilles Shield’ model, part of the ‘Agenda 2030’ military reforms. He emphasized that regional security must be anchored in international law and the law of the sea.
On a bilateral level, Dendias revealed that Greece is in discussions with Italy for the potential transfer of two second-hand Italian Navy minehunters. This acquisition aims to bolster the Greek Navy’s mine warfare capabilities and protect critical maritime infrastructure in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, complementing existing agreements such as the procurement of FREMM frigates.
