Greece regional defense and maritime security initiatives
Overview
Greece continues to advance its regional defense and maritime security through multilateral cooperation and bilateral naval acquisitions. During the ADRION summit in Venice, hosted by Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias met with ministers from Albania, Croatia, Montenegro, and Slovenia to address regional stability.
Dendias used the summit to advocate for a collective European defense shield modeled after Greece’s ‘Achilles Shield’ framework, a component of the nation’s ‘Agenda 2030’ military reforms. He emphasized that regional security efforts must remain anchored in international law and the law of the sea.
Regarding bilateral maritime capabilities, Dendias revealed that Greece is in discussions with Italy for the potential transfer of two second-hand Italian Navy minehunters to bolster mine warfare capabilities and protect critical infrastructure in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. Additionally, bilateral talks with Crosetto included the potential transfer of two used Italian anti-narcotics vessels to Greece.
Beyond the Adriatic and Ionian seas, Greece maintains a strategic presence in Saudi Arabia, where Greek forces have been stationed in Yanbu since 2021. Expanding on its role as a security provider, Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis met with US official Marco Rubio in Athens to launch the 6th round of the Greece-US Strategic Dialogue. Gerapetritis expressed Greece's readiness to provide maritime assistance in the Strait of Hormuz if conditions allow and a sustainable peace process is in place, noting that Greek operations in the Red Sea, Mediterranean, and Indian Ocean complement US initiatives.
