Niksen and the psychological importance of guilt-free rest

Modern productivity culture often leads individuals to view rest as a loss of time or a sign of laziness, frequently resulting in guilt during vacations. This phenomenon is driven by a societal emphasis on constant efficiency, internal pressure to maintain professional identities, and social comparison through digital media.

As a countermeasure, the Dutch concept of ‘niksen’—the art of doing nothing—has gained international attention. Unlike passive consumption of social media or structured relaxation, niksen involves the conscious decision to engage in activities without a specific purpose or utility, such as watching rain fall or observing nature, to provide genuine mental respite.
