Nilüfer district converts unused decorative pools into community gardens

The Nilüfer municipality in Bursa, Turkey is repurposing long‑idle ornamental water pools that were costly to maintain into city gardens. The pools are being filled with soil and planted with seasonal flowers and other greenery, creating public green spaces.

The project is coordinated with the Nilüfer City Council and includes planting events where children and senior residents jointly work on the gardens. Mayor Şadi Özdemir says the initiative saves water, reduces maintenance expenses, and supports a sustainable, participatory urban model in response to the climate crisis.

The transformation aims to turn under‑used public land into valuable community assets, enhancing the city’s visual appeal while promoting environmental stewardship.
