Nilüfer district unites against planned solid waste landfill

The Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Council approved a zoning plan to build a solid waste facility on the border of the Kayapa and Kuruçeşme neighbourhoods in Nilüfer. In response, Nilüfer’s mayors, the district council, dozens of muhtars and NGOs gathered and declared a unified opposition, stating “We do not want a landfill.”

Mayor Şadi Özdemir and Deputy Mayor Emre Karagöz warned that the proposal ignores active fault lines, water basins and recent scientific risk assessments. They noted that similar plans in 2016, 2022 and 2023 were halted after legal challenges. The opponents highlighted that the site would see about 550 heavy‑truck trips daily, threatening traffic, safety and the local environment.

The coalition pledged to attend upcoming Bursa municipal council meetings to voice their objections and to continue mobilising residents to protect Nilüfer’s residential, cultural and natural areas.
