Balochistan police post attack kills nine officers, sparks large‑scale security response

Gunmen stormed a police checkpoint protecting the Mangi Dam construction site in Ziarat district, Balochistan, on the night of 6‑7 July 2026. Nine police officers, including senior SHOs, were killed and several others were abducted; five were later rescued while 18 remained missing.

Security forces launched a joint clearance operation involving the Frontier Corps, Balochistan Police, Counter‑Terrorism Department, Special Operations Wing and Anti‑Terrorist Force. The operation killed at least 15 militants, which officials identified as members of the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) or Tehreek‑e‑Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

In the following days, Pakistan’s military said the wave of attacks across Balochistan had left a total of 42 security personnel and civilians dead and 54 militants killed in retaliatory operations. Islamabad blamed India and the Afghan Taliban regime for supporting the militants, allegations that both countries denied. The incident triggered protests and road blockades on the national highway linking Quetta and Ziarat.

The attacks highlight the fragile security situation in Pakistan’s southwestern province, where separatist insurgents and Pakistani Taliban groups continue to target state forces and infrastructure projects such as the China‑Pakistan Economic Corridor.
