Operation Shaban Continues amid Baloch Insurgency

Entities: Hangu district · Frontier Corps · Murid Bugti · Balochistan Liberation Army · Mastung district

Overview

The joint Army‑Frontier Corps‑Police campaign launched after the 4 July raid on the Mangi Dam post, known as Operation Shaban, remains active. By mid‑July the operation had claimed roughly 140 militant deaths, destroyed hideouts and ammunition caches, and led to the arrest of several suspected female suicide bombers. A parallel intelligence‑driven effort, Operation Al‑Azm, added 16 terrorist kills and dismantled multiple militant sites in Killi Kundi Umrani, Khad Kocha and Mastung.

In response to a police checkpoint attack in Ziarat that killed nine officers and resulted in the abduction of 18 cadets (later recovered), provincial authorities reached a settlement with the victims’ families, establishing a judicial commission, compensation and reforms for urban police and Levies.

The security environment further escalated after separatist groups revived an independence claim and an ambush near Mastung left dozens dead. On 29 July militants of the Baloch Liberation Army abducted and killed Deputy Superintendent of Police Murid Bugti in Barkhan, while separate kidnappings in Turbat and Khuzdar left civilian casualties. Security forces responded with intelligence‑based sweeps across Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, killing at least 44 militants and three police officers, and continuing clearance missions in Hangu, Nushki, Swat and other districts. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reiterated that operations will proceed until “the last terrorist” is neutralised.
