Nintendo Switch 2 receives VRR support via system update

Nintendo has released system version 23.0.0 for the Switch 2, introducing Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support when the console is docked and connected to a television. While VRR was previously available in handheld mode, this update allows the television to synchronize its refresh rate with the console to prevent screen tearing and stuttering during gameplay.

Unlike some competitors that implement VRR at a system-wide level, Nintendo utilizes a whitelist approach. This means VRR only activates for games specifically flagged by developers to support the feature. Currently, only one title, ‘Switch 2 Welcome Tour’, is reported to support VRR in docked mode.

Additional features in the 23.0.0 update include the ability to transfer all data, including save files and screenshots, between two Switch 2 consoles. The update also introduces a ‘Switch 2 Boost’ quick-access button, accessibility improvements, and background music options within the Mii editor.
