Nigerian security forces repel gunmen attack on NIPSS, one assailant killed

Security operatives at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, Plateau State, repelled an armed assault shortly after 11 p.m. on 1 July 2026. The attackers attempted to breach the institute’s outer security perimeter but were driven back after a gun battle that left one gunman dead and several others fleeing with injuries.

The institute’s head of public affairs, Dr Osime Samuel, said in a statement that “there was no breach of the security perimeter. All participants, staff, residents and institute facilities remain safe and secure.” The response follows a similar raid two weeks earlier that killed three people, including security personnel, prompting heightened surveillance, additional armed guards and joint patrols around the facility.

Authorities said they have intensified efforts to track the fleeing suspects and will continue to strengthen surveillance and other proactive security measures around the institute.
