Nirmal Purja killed in Broad Peak avalanche in Pakistan FAST-MOVING
Renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, 43, died when an avalanche struck his international expedition on Broad Peak (8,047 m) in Pakistan’s Karakoram range in early August 2026. The ten‑person team, organized by Purja’s company Elite Exped and composed of climbers from Nepal, Pakistan, Oman, the United States and China, was caught near 6,600 m altitude while moving from Camp 2 to Camp 3. Elite Exped confirmed the deaths via an Instagram post, stating that none of the members survived.
Pakistani rescue teams deployed military helicopters, drones and ground crews. Four bodies were recovered and taken to a hospital in Skardu; the remaining six climbers remain missing. Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah expressed deep grief over the loss of Purja and the other nine climbers. The incident has prompted an outpouring of condolences from the global climbing community.
