Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has held several high-level meetings in New Delhi addressing regional financial needs and international economic cooperation.

In the Northeast, Chief Ministers Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam and Conrad K. Sangma of Meghalaya met with Sitharaman to seek a renewed push for Externally Aided Projects (EAPs). The discussions focused on increasing capital expenditure to develop physical and social infrastructure. Meghalaya specifically sought an additional Rs 10,000 crore allocation under the EAP window.

In Himachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met the Finance Minister to discuss a projected annual financial gap of approximately Rs 8,000 crore. He cited the discontinuation of the Revenue Deficit Grant and the state’s difficult geographical conditions as primary challenges, requesting additional financial assistance and an enhanced borrowing limit.

On the international front, Sitharaman reviewed India’s priorities for the BRICS Finance Track ahead of the upcoming meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors in Mumbai. The discussions also included engagements with IMF Deputy Managing Director Nigel Clarke regarding India’s economic growth trajectory and global economic resilience.
