Nissan tests 2027 Frontier Pro plug‑in hybrid ute in Australia

Nissan has begun testing its upcoming 2027 Frontier Pro plug‑in hybrid ute in Australia. The pre‑production, right‑hand‑drive vehicle was seen at Nissan Australia’s training and development centre in Melbourne, marking the first confirmed sighting of the China‑built model, which may be badged locally as the Navara Pro.

Co‑developed with Chinese partner Dongfeng and related to the Dongfeng Z9, the body‑on‑frame ute combines a 1.5‑litre four‑cylinder engine with a transmission‑mounted electric motor, delivering 300 kW (800 Nm) of power. Nissan claims a fuel consumption of about 6.9 L / 100 km and an electric‑only range of roughly 135 km. It can tow up to 3 500 kg and offers vehicle‑to‑load (V2L) capability with power outlets in the tray.

Inside, the Frontier Pro features a 10‑inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.6‑inch infotainment screen, a panoramic sunroof and heated, ventilated and massage‑function seats. While exact Australian specifications are not yet finalised, Nissan expects the ute to launch later in 2026 with customer deliveries beginning in 2027.

Richard Candler, Nissan’s executive for family, product and component strategy, said the model is being tuned for Australian requirements and noted that an exclusive SUV version based on the Frontier Pro platform is also in development, aimed at offering a plug‑in hybrid off‑road family vehicle.
