Nisyros municipality introduces 3,000 euro birth grant
The Municipality of Nisyros has approved a one-time birth grant of 3,000 euros for every new child born to families who are permanent residents and citizens of the island. The measure, proposed by Mayor Christofis Koronaios, was passed unanimously by the Municipal Council.
This initiative aims to address demographic challenges and encourage young families to remain on the island. The 3,000 euro payment is the maximum amount permitted under the new Greek Local Government Code. The grant is tax-free and will not affect eligibility for other social benefits.
A credit of 9,000 euros has already been allocated in the 2026 municipal budget to facilitate the program. Additionally, the municipality is considering a further monthly financial support of 150 euros for each child until they reach five years of age.
