Niterói advances construction of Cinema Icaraí cultural complex
Construction is progressing on the revitalization of the historic Cinema Icaraí and Getúlio Vargas Square in Niterói, Brazil. The project, managed by the Empresa de Infraestrutura e Obras de Niterói (ION), aims to transform the 1940s art déco building into the Cine Concerto Sérgio Mendes, a multi-use cultural complex.
Key structural developments include the completion of the concert hall stage and the pouring of floor slabs for two future cinema rooms. The facility is designed to host the National Symphony Orchestra of the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), musical performances, and film screenings. The complex will also feature a restaurant, administrative areas, and dressing rooms.
In addition to the building restoration, the adjacent Getúlio Vargas Square is undergoing a transformation to include new gardens, a playground, and dedicated spaces for animals and social interaction, integrating the historic site with the Icaraí waterfront.
