Niterói cultural infrastructure revitalization

Overview

The city of Niterói is undertaking several projects to restore and revitalize its cultural and urban spaces.

In the city center, the municipal government announced plans to expropriate and restore the Teatro Leopoldo Fróes. The venue, which has been closed since 1991 and suffered fire damage in 2021, is intended to become a cultural hub under the ‘Reviver Centro’ program.

Simultaneously, work is progressing on the Cinema Icaraí to transform the 1940s art déco building into the Cine Concerto Sérgio Mendes. This multi-use complex will feature a concert hall for the National Symphony Orchestra of the Fluminense Federal University, cinema rooms, and a restaurant. The project also includes the revitalization of the adjacent Getúlio Vargas Square to integrate the site with the Icaraí waterfront.
