Niterói bans sports betting advertising in public spaces

The city government of Niterói, Brazil, has prohibited the advertising of sports betting platforms and fixed-odds games in public spaces and outdoor advertising throughout the municipality. The measure, formalized by Mayor Rodrigo Neves via decree, aims to protect the population—particularly children and adolescents—from the risks of compulsive gambling, debt, and mental health issues.

The ban covers various forms of promotion, including brand names, digital platforms, websites, applications, bonuses, and prizes. It also prohibits the use of logos, mascots, and slogans that could indirectly identify betting companies. Entities have ten days to remove non-compliant advertisements. This decree focuses on municipal jurisdiction over public spaces and does not interfere with the federal regulation of the betting industry itself.
