Niterói hosts 78th SBPC Annual Meeting focused on inclusion and traditional knowledge

The 78th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC) will take place in Niterói from July 26 to August 1, 2026. Activities are scheduled at the Gragoatá campus of the Federal University of Fluminense (UFF) and the Cantareira Innovation District. Described as the largest scientific gathering in Latin America, the event’s theme is “Science for All: sovereignty, development and inclusion.”

The programme highlights inclusion, diversity and pluralism through dedicated Afro‑Indigenous‑Traditional Communities and Gender‑Diversity‑Equity commissions. Conferences, round‑tables and debates will address decolonising research practices and valuing ancestral knowledge from Indigenous peoples and quilombola communities. The meeting is supported by the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (Faperj), the Itaú Foundation and the city of Niterói, whose mayor Rodrigo Neves said the event reaffirms the municipality’s commitment to science, education and innovation.
