Niterói Launches 'Oná' Exhibition Highlighting African Ancestry and Brazil‑Angola Ties

The city of Niterói opened the exhibition "Oná – O Caminho da Arte que Nos Atravessa" on 22 June 2026. Hosted in the Cúpula do Caminho Niemeyer in the city centre, the show runs free to the public until 9 July 2026 (some sources note 10 July).

The exhibition is organised by the Subsecretaria de Promoção da Igualdade Racial (SUPIR) and the Municipal Secretariat of Human Rights, in partnership with the Consulate General of Angola in Brazil. Curated by Joel Vieira, it presents artworks and cultural expressions that explore African ancestry, memory and identity, aiming to foster reflection on racial equality and democratic values.

Municipal officials emphasised the event’s role in reinforcing Brazil‑Angola historical links and confronting structural racism. Secretary of Human Rights Claudia Almeida said the show “recognises the deep contribution of African peoples to our culture and helps strengthen democracy and fight persisting inequalities.” Sub‑secretary Oto Bahia added that the exhibition “reaffirms the living ties that bind our societies across the Atlantic.” The programme also supports preparations for the Brazil‑Africa PALOPs meeting, promoting dialogue within the African‑Portuguese‑speaking community.
