Niterói to restore Teatro Leopoldo Fróes after decades of closure
The Niterói City Hall has announced the expropriation and restoration of the Teatro Leopoldo Fróes, located in the city's center at Praça da República. The venue has been closed since 1991 and was previously damaged by a fire in 2021. Mayor Rodrigo Neves is expected to sign the expropriation decree this week to begin the process of transforming the space into a cultural hub for local artistic production.
The theater, which belongs to the Mitra Diocesana, holds significant historical value. Opened in 1973, it was once closed by the Department of Political and Social Order (DOPS) during the military dictatorship following a specific performance. Over the decades, it hosted prominent musical and theatrical acts, serving as a vital stage for local artists. The restoration project is part of the ‘Reviver Centro’ program, aimed at revitalizing the central region of Niterói.
