Nitric acid leak triggers emergency response in Seewinkel
A nitric acid leak occurred at a facility in the Seewinkel region near Wallern, Austria, on Thursday, October 1, 2026. The incident took place in a newly constructed greenhouse and technical hall during the initial filling of a nitric acid tank.
Due to a defect in a connection flange, approximately 500 liters of 38% nitric acid escaped within the technical hall, spreading over sand-covered flooring. Although initial reports suggested a larger volume of 2,700 liters, the actual amount was contained to the interior of the building.
Facility employees acted quickly to dilute the acid and secure the area before emergency services arrived. While the leak triggered a large-scale response involving approximately 70 firefighters, 15 vehicles, and specialized hazardous material units from Eisenstadt and Neusiedl am See, no danger to humans or the environment was reported. Emergency crews monitored pH levels and managed the disposal of contaminated sand, concluding the operation after roughly four hours.
