Nitric acid leak in Seewinkel, Austria

Overview

On October 1, 2026, a nitric acid leak occurred at a facility in the Seewinkel region near Wallern, Austria. The incident happened during the initial filling of a tank in a newly constructed greenhouse and technical hall.

A defect in a connection flange caused approximately 500 liters of 38% nitric acid to escape onto sand-covered flooring within the building. While initial reports estimated a larger volume of 2,700 liters, the spill was contained to the interior.

Facility employees worked to dilute the acid before emergency services arrived. A large-scale response involving approximately 70 firefighters and specialized hazardous material units from Eisenstadt and Neusiedl am See was deployed. Emergency crews monitored pH levels and managed the disposal of contaminated sand, concluding the operation after roughly four hours with no reported danger to humans or the environment.
