NL Wild Card race intensifies among Cubs, Phillies, Padres, and Diamondbacks

The race for the National League Wild Card spots is intensifying as several teams approach the final stretch of the season. The Chicago Cubs currently hold tiebreakers over the Philadelphia Phillies, Arizona Diamondbacks, and San Diego Padres. As of Thursday, the Cubs trail the Phillies by 1.5 games, while maintaining leads of 2.5 games over the Padres and three games over the Diamondbacks.

The San Diego Padres hold a half-game advantage for the final Wild Card spot. Facing challenges with starting pitching due to injuries and inconsistent performances, manager Craig Stammen indicated the team may take an aggressive approach in October by relying heavily on their bullpen, which currently holds the second-lowest ERA in baseball. The Padres face a 16-game stretch, including a critical three-game series against the Diamondbacks at the end of the schedule.
