NMDPRA updates gas transportation code and petrol import rules

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has introduced Revision II of the Nigerian Gas Transportation Network Code (NGTNC). Unveiled by Authority Chief Executive Mallam Rabiu Abdullahi Umar in Lagos, the revised framework aims to improve market efficiency, enhance access to gas infrastructure, and accelerate investment in the sector by providing transparent rules for capacity booking, measurement, and quality standards.

Additionally, the NMDPRA has established new conditions for petrol import licences. Under the new guidelines, licences will be granted based on published merit-based criteria and transparent assessments of supply shortfalls. This shift follows a significant increase in domestic refining capacity; according to Umar, domestic refineries now account for approximately 75 per cent of the petrol supplied to Nigeria, resulting in imports being reduced by more than half within a year.
