Nnamdi Kanu's detention prompts US aid warning and lawyer dismissal

U.S. Representative John James introduced a resolution urging the Nigerian government to either grant a fresh trial to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu or release him, warning that continued U.S. financial assistance could be reduced. James linked Kanu’s prosecution to broader persecution of Christians and the ongoing threat from extremist groups, describing Kanu’s conviction as a “farcical show trial.”

From Sokoto Correctional Centre, Kanu wrote a letter confirming the termination of his long‑time personal lawyer Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor. He ordered Ejiofor to cease representing him, his family, or the Indigenous People of Biafra in any capacity, to stop public statements, and to withdraw from all pending matters, warning of possible professional misconduct if he violates the notice.
