In early June 2026, Nigeria’s federal government filed a cross‑appeal to upgrade IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu’s life sentence to the death penalty, prompting a diplomatic row with the United Kingdom over his dual citizenship. IPOB challenged the move, arguing the trial court lacked jurisdiction and that the conviction relied on a repealed terrorism statute rather than current law. Later that month, IPOB sent a delegation to Washington, D.C., to brief U.S. lawmakers and civil-society groups on Kanu’s detention and alleged persecution of Christians. Around the same time, MASSOB founder Ralph Uwazuruike accused Kanu of using his detention in Sokoto to recruit Igbo youths for violence via a new “Directorate of State,” citing a “100-man project” and social media videos of hooded militants. In July, IPOB announced a coordinated assassination plot against Kanu following televised calls for his execution, threatening legal action against broadcasters. On 26 July, U.S. Representative John James introduced a resolution warning that U.S. aid could be reduced unless Kanu receives a fresh trial, describing the conviction as a “farcical show trial.” Following the resolution, Kanu formally dismissed his longtime lawyer, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, in late July. In August, Kanu's special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, alleged “prosecutorial overkill,” claiming “the judiciary was hoodwinked” and that the government manipulated the process to punish political agitation for a separate Biafran state. Additionally, lawyer Christopher Chidera, representing the Mazi Nnamdi Kanu Global Legal Consortium, criticized the Nigerian Bar Association for its silence on Kanu’s detention. Chidera questioned the legal basis of Kanu’s continued imprisonment, arguing that a civil stay of execution was used to prevent his release despite a 2022 Court of Appeal order quashing charges, asserting that “liberty is not a debt.”
