Overview

In early June 2026 Nigeria’s federal government filed a cross‑appeal to upgrade IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu’s life sentence to the death penalty, prompting a diplomatic row with the United Kingdom over his dual citizenship. IPOB challenged the move, arguing the trial court lacked jurisdiction and that the conviction relied on a repealed terrorism statute.

Later that month IPOB sent a delegation to Washington, D.C., to brief U.S. lawmakers and civil‑society groups on Kanu’s detention and alleged persecution of Christians, seeking broader international involvement.

Around the same time MASSOB founder Ralph Uwazuruike publicly accused Kanu, who remains in Sokoto prison, of recruiting Igbo youths for violent acts from inside the facility. He cited a newly created IPOB “Directorate of State” and a vague “100‑man project,” warned that the recruitment had already caused several deaths, and urged Igbo leaders and Ohanaeze Ndigbo to travel to Sokoto to demand an end to the activity. Social‑media videos of hooded militants claiming loyalty to Kanu circulated, heightening tensions.

In July IPOB announced a coordinated assassination plot against Kanu after an entrepreneur called for his execution on television, threatened legal action against the broadcaster and individuals, thanked Israel’s Knesset delegation for support, and denied any role in recent regional violence.

On 19 July IPOB reiterated the alleged plot, again thanked Israel, and reaffirmed that an independent Biafra is the only lasting solution, blaming government‑linked militias for violence.

On 26 July U.S. Representative John James introduced a resolution warning that continued U.S. aid could be reduced unless Kanu receives a fresh trial or is released, describing his conviction as a “farcical show trial.” The same day Kanu dismissed his longtime lawyer Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, ordering him to cease representation and warning of possible misconduct.
