Nnamdi Kanu’s family urges independent medical care amid health concerns

The family of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu has warned that his health was neglected while in custody, citing dangerously low potassium levels, hypertension, kidney and cardiac issues. After an independent medical team led by Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji gained access, Kanu’s potassium rose from 2.1 mmol/L to 2.9 mmol/L and symptoms such as nosebleeds and fainting lessened.

The family says the independent doctors have faced intimidation and disciplinary actions and is calling for unrestricted access to Kanu’s preferred physicians, the withdrawal of proceedings against the doctors, and an independent review of his medical records. Copies of their petition have been sent to the United States, United Kingdom, Israel, Nigerian authorities and international human‑rights organisations, and a separate appeal has been made to the Nigerian Medical Association for protection of the medical team.
